Since I’m constantly reading about communication and media theory for my thesis right now, I’m constantly coming across really awesome quotes about media and society and the way it all works. I keep wanting to post about them, but never have time — so instead I will just start posting a communication quote of the day each day.
Today’s quote: from Michael Shudson, in The Sociology of News, on the various zones of media coverage
“In the zone of ‘legitimate controversy,’ recognition of a culturally sanctioned conflict (like anything on which the two leading political parties differ) guarantees a professionalism dedicated to preserving both sides. In the zone of deviance, coverage of issues or groups goes beyond the reach of normal reportorial obligations of balance and fairness. These topics – for instance, gang members, sex offenders, pre-teen girls who swoon over pop music idols, and those pop music idols whose primary fans are pre-teen girls — can be ridiculed, marginalized or trivialized because reporters instinctively realize that mainstream culture treats them with derision or contempt” (187).
